About our Parish

East Chiltington is a small rural parish, which forms a narrow strip about 6 miles long and 2 miles across at its widest point. It runs from the top of the South Downs bordering Falmer at the Buckland Bank, follows down the chalk escarpment cutting through the greensand ridge Northwards to the edge of the Wealden clay in Great Home Wood. About one third of the parish at its Southern end is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The Parish is home to about 180 families. Most of these live in houses and farms scattered along our quiet, single track lanes. There are two clusters of housing; in the centre of the parish, and Pouchlands, a housing development at the Eastern border of the parish with South Chailey.

In the centre of the Parish, Chapel Lane leads past the pub/restaurant, the Jolly Sportsman, and up to the beautiful 13th Century church. Behind the houses at Hollycroft on Chapel Lane there is a playing field and a children’s play area. There is no school, shop, or parish hall. However, East Chiltington is a thriving community. There are several local businesses, most land is still in farming use, and many people in the parish work locally.
